IB Community Projects

What is the MYP Community Project?

As part of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (MYP), Spring Valley Academy will be engaging in a new program to involve our students in the communities surrounding their daily lives. This project will be introduced during 7th grade, and completed during the 8th grade year. All 8th grade students are required to complete a CommunityProject.

Goal of the Community Project:

The community project focuses on community and service, encouraging students to explore opportunities to identify and address problems within different communities.

MYP projects help students to develop important skills, provide students with an essential opportunity to demonstrate their abilities to problem solve, research, collaborate, and communicate, and promote a vision of themselves as independent, lifelong learners.

The aims of the MYP projects are to encourage and enable students to:

  • Participate in a sustained, self-directed inquiry within a global context

  • Create new insights and develop deeper understandings through in-depth investigation

  • Encourage the persistence and follow-through needed to complete a long-term project

  • Communicate effectively in a variety of situations

  • Demonstrate responsible action through, or as a result of, learning

  • Appreciate the process of learning and take pride in their accomplishments

Students will record their activities throughout the project in a Process Journal, and will culminate with an oral presentation.
