Common Questions

What is the MYP Community   Project?

The MYP Community Project is a required part of the International      Baccalaureate Middle Years Program. MYP projects are student-    centered and age-appropriate, and they allow students to engage in    practical explorations through inquiry, action and reflection.

When will my student be participating in   the MYP Community  Project?

Students will be introduced to the MYP Community Project during the    Winter/Spring of their 7th grade year (MYP Year 2), and will complete  the project during their 8th grade year (MYP Year 3).

Why is Roton Middle School requiring students to complete an MYP Community Project?

MYP projects help students to develop important skills, provide    students with an essential opportunity to demonstrate their abilities to  problem solve, research, collaborate, and communicate, and promote a  vision of themselves as independent, lifelong learners.

What will my student have to do for the MYP Community Project?

With the support of a faculty advisor, students will be completing an  MYP Community Project of their choice. Projects may include research  into an issue in the community, efforts to raise awareness (public  service announcements, letters to the editor), or calls to action  (advertising/social media campaigns), to name a few.

Students will record their steps towards completing their projects in a  Process Journal, and will make an oral presentation when they are  finished. The presentation can be in person, through a video, and will  be displayed and articulated at the end of the year through a  community project fair.

How long will the MYP Community Project take to complete?

Students will begin the planning of the MYP Community Project in 7th  grade, and will present their final project during their 8th grade year.

Planning, periodic progress checks, and other work on the project will  be completed during Advisory classes, although students will also need  to spend some time outside of class working on their projects.

Will there be any costs for participating in the MYP Community Project?

Depending on the type of MYP Community Project students choose,  there may be some small costs involved. Costs will be part of the  discussion that students have with their faculty advisors during the  planning phase of their MYP Community Project.

Who can I contact if I have questions about the MYP Community Project?

Your student’s 8th grade Advisory teacher will be your main contact  regarding the MYP Community Project.
